Only a few weeks until the start of the trek from Colchester to Holme, Norfolk. Yesterday we completed our Tuesday walk. Disappointed that it was only 8 miles it felt like much more. I was so tired after I arrived home I had to have a long snooze! The plus side is I'm drinking more water!
WEDNESDAY 4th March
Fitted in another training walk today. Walked 6 or so miles. Rina was fascinated by the size of this oak tree.
It was only after 18 months of losing weight, that I thought I might be able to do this walk. It will be easier if I can lose more weight before 27th April... and the beginning of our trek north. Yesterday I received an award from my Slimming World group for being their ‘Greatest Loser 2020’!
This week I’m finding I’m in a lot of pain, I need to investigate how I can manage it better. I think it’s sciatica in my hips and legs! I need to find some treatment soon... although I do find it does help a bit when I’m exercising at the gym.
I’ve also been writing press releases ready to start alerting the media and public about fundraising for Lt Massingham Church roof. I’m still along way off my target and I’d really like to exceed it! The church has been hit by some really bad weather this year. I was told part of the temporary roofing blew off and the tower window blew in.
Tuesday 10th March
Today was a walk with a difference. We had limited time for our training today, so we set off to walk as far as we could in just under one and a quarter hours. We didn’t have a clear plan as to where we would be heading, but as it turned out, we walked as far as the Rowhedge sign! The round trip was a fraction under 6.5 miles. The journey back was uneventful, until my foot hit a rising section of pavement. It was enough to throw me off balance and I stumbled forward unable to stop. I soon realised I wasn’t going to be able to save myself, so I let gravity take over. While I was falling, I decided it would be better if I could soften the impact - and perhaps stave off a few broken bones - by rolling to one side, rather than falling face down. I ended up on my side, sprawled flat out. Having laid on the ground for a while recovering, Rina and a kindly man, helped me to my feet. It seemed a longer walk home than I was expecting! This was my second fall while training before our trek! Rina said I’m only allowed one more! I think I’ll give the third a miss!
Sunday 15th March
At 9.35 this morning, Rina, Norma and I set off on one of my magical mystery tours. I didn’t tell them where we were going when we started, although it was soon apparent that we were walking north! We first walked to the Castle, continuing on over Middle Mill. Later we took a chance and crossed Cowdray Avenue where we found a footpath which took us to the railway lines, turning right we followed the track until we found the tunnel which took us under the line. Shortly afterwards we found ourselves in High Woods Country Park.
I took this photo of the Colchester skyline.
Before we arrived in the woods we decide to take some photos of ourselves!
This one was of Rina and me and the other was of Norma and me! It was a beautiful place to stop, especially as it was half way up the hill!
On the way back we stopped in town for a coffee and something to eat. Then did a little shopping and back home. Norma left us at this point after we had walked over 7.5 miles. After a cup of tea at mine, Rina and I went out and walked for another hour. Really please that in total we walked slightly over 10 miles. Feeling really confident that we can walk those 90 or so miles. The Coronavirus is the one thing that can stop us... but if we can... we are going to do it!
Tuesday 17th March
Went out on our usual Tuesday training day, as we over 70s can still take exercise! Did a detour through Castle Park. Had to have a photo taken in front of these lovely flowerbeds.
Headed to High Woods Country Park again as we had so enjoyed our walk there on Sunday. Total mileage today, 7 miles. Not sure how I’m going to keep up the training over the next few weeks. My gym has offered to freeze my membership for three months. Perhaps need to walk in a quiet place several times everyday just to keep up the stamina.
Tuesday 31st March
Over the last couple of weeks everything has changed. COVID-19 has disrupted so many plans and lives and my walk has been postponed. Even my daily training has had to change, and where I was exercising close to home has changed.
The 17th of March was the last time Rina and I walked together. After that I continued to walk on my own, even before the restrictions came in. Up until last week I was still walking 3.5 miles a day, but unfortunately I had to stop distance walking, because others insisted on coming too close. The last time I was on my usual ramble, I met a family coming down the path I was on. I asked them to stop so I could get to another opening in the hedge and get away from them - they didn’t - so all I could do was to turn my back on them as the brushed by me! So dangerous and selfish.
I don’t live a million miles from the wonderful Abbey Field, Colchester, now this is my new training ground! It gets a little boring after a while, walking up and down but it’s safe and I can keep away from everyone. I think by the time this isolation is over I will know every inch of this field!
Tomorrow is the start of a new month, I plan to start uploading some of my Peddars Way research.
